joy: option chain ridgeline plot

joy is the ConvexValue Terminal app that draws one option parameter across the whole chain of a symbol, live. Each expiration is a row, each strike a bar: open interest, volume, gamma or any other parameter, for calls and puts, at a glance.

How to use joy

joy SYMBOL PARAMETER [param=value ...]
joy aapl oi

The symbol and the parameter are required, in that order. Type the command in the command bar of a pane, or set the same parameters in the control panel (the ⚙️ at the right of the bar). In a browser, the app opens at convexvalue.com/go/joy/.

Parameters

Parameter Values Default What it does
SYMBOL An underlying symbol, or @ required The underlying. @ is the global symbol.
PARAMETER One options parameter: oi, volm, gxoi, volatility ... required What the bars show.
exp Numbers, ranges or both: 1, 1-5, 1-5,10 every expiration Which expirations to draw. 1 is the nearest.
rng A whole number, a percentage every strike Keeps the strikes within that percentage of the spot price. rng=10 is 10% up and down.
flip t or f f flip multiplies the puts' values by -1, so that puts are drawn below the line and calls above.
net t or f f net adds the net of calls and puts at each strike, in red.
onet t or f f onet draws the net only.
agg t or f f agg adds the expirations up into one chart.
dollar t or f f dollar multiplies the values by 100 and by the spot price, for dollar measures such as dollar gamma.
curve t or f t curve=f hides the filled curve through the strikes.
sumbars t or f t sumbars=f hides the bars that show each expiration's total of calls and of puts.
hb t or f f hb hides the bottom chart and its handles.
nm t or f f nm removes the margins of the chart.

The parameters you can draw are the Options Parameters of the Data Parameters page. The control panel lists them too.

Examples

joy aapl oi

The open interest of AAPL at every strike and expiration.

joy ADBE volm

Today's volume instead: where the trading is.

joy SPY gxoi flip rng=5 exp=1-5

Gamma multiplied by open interest for the five nearest expirations, within 5% of the spot price, the puts drawn below the line.

joy NVDA oi net exp=1-8

Open interest with the net of calls and puts added in red.

joy TSLA volm agg rng=10

The volume of every expiration added up into one chart.

joy @ oi

Open interest for whatever the global symbol is.

How to read it

  • The expirations are stacked from top to bottom. In each row the horizontal axis is the strike and the height of a bar is the parameter.
  • Calls are yellow, puts are blue.
  • At the left of each row: the total of the calls, the total of the puts, and the two together.
  • The vertical line is the spot price. It moves with the stock, and the bars update as the market does.
  • The bottom chart is every expiration added up. Drag its two handles to zoom in on a range of strikes; every row follows.
  • Move the pointer to read the nearest strike and its call and put values.
  • stks: the same parameter added up by strike, as a table.
  • olay: the same parameter as one line per expiration.
  • grid: how the parameter changed since an earlier day.
  • flowsum: the totals by expiration, as numbers.
